Epicurus’s radical retreat
Diogenes Laërtius, in Lives of the Eminent Philosophers, quotes Epicurus: «Λάθε βιώσας.» — “Live in obscurity.” For Epicurus, real joy grew in private, away from crowds and ambition.
Why Epicurus stayed small
Epicurus believed that fame was a trap—the more people watching, the less you actually live. He kept his circle tight, his pleasures simple, and his joy out of reach for drama-hungry Athens. His garden was the only spotlight he cared about.
In an age obsessed with fame, Epicurus would rather tend his garden in peace. Sometimes quiet is the sharpest rebellion.
